Rainbow In Your Life

Inspired by Maya Angelou
Let me be a rainbow in your life
Let me shine my many colors and brighten up yur day
A brightened day that soon turned to night as I'm quickly dying with anticipation an stuffed with delight
Delighted for the reveal of what awaits on the other side of these doors
Let me be a rainbow in your life Let me shine my many colors and brighten up yur day
Maybe ill smile so big my lips are permanently stuck
Running stumbling yet full of joy
Even when I buck my toe an nearly fell
I played it off an kept going
Doors fly wide open
Givin way to an enormous room
Filled with a rainbow sea of races
Traces back generations to generations
Interrupted message
Ladies and gentlemen the show is about to start so please no cameras and enjoy the show
A woman's voice can be heard echoing through the halls
The keys touched an so delicately rang out sweet classical music
I enjoyed it and was tickled with admiration
Knowing that I was sittin on the balcony
With a group of the most talented females waiting and waiting the arrival of the nights special guest
Curtains open and I'm entranced and
Dazzled as a beautiful bright brilliant red dress flows onto the stage
Damn ms Maya Angelou looks so gracious
So confident
So beautiful
She tells a story
A story that sticks
Like honey and peanut butter
This is what I learnt from her
Let me be a rainbow in your life
Let me ease the fret
And start a legacy

Let me sing that song
Rub that back
Play taxi for a day
Even throw money your way
Let me play that jam
Boogie down with one hand in the air
Today is yur day to smile
Even if for a little awhile
I could be a stranger in the street
But a rainbow in yur life
Maybe it will encourage yu
To do something nice an become a rainbow in someone else’s life
Passed down from generation to generation
Jus like crippled willie
From the words of Maya Angelou "He taught me my times table"
An although he was not fully able
And stable with a portion of his body
His mind his words his teachings
Reached a white man
An I was blessed with the opportunity to hear this story
An inspiration that could potentially heal a nation
I took the time to listen an I let the words settle in that I could be a rainbow in someone’s life and someone could be a rainbow in my life

Reflection & Context

This piece was written from a place of admiration, gratitude, and the realization that legacy is not only built through fame, but through kindness, courage, and showing up with color in a world that often feels grey. It reflects the moment of witnessing greatness and understanding that influence is not about spotlight, but about impact.

It carries the desire to live in a way that uplifts others, to be a reminder of beauty, hope, and possibility. Inspired by Maya Angelou, this poem honors the way words, presence, and spirit can ripple across generations and teach us that we are each capable of becoming light in someone else’s story.

Reflection Prompt

Who has been a rainbow in your life during a difficult season?

How might you bring color, kindness, or encouragement into someone else’s world today?
